With the high school basketball season quickly approaching, it’s important to take care of your body and mind so you can stay healthy and optimize your performance. We simply can’t be at our best when we feel tired, sluggish or don’t feel 100% physically. These 3 habits will help you maximize your ability this season.
Sleep is your super power. Getting a good night’s rest is key to having a high level of focus at school, practice, and games. During a long season you will feel better and more energized when you get enough sleep. It’s also important in reducing your chances of getting a cold or flu. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep each night so that your body is able to function and be at its full potential.
“If sleep could be bottled up as a performance enhancing drug it would be a billion dollar industry”
Technology is a huge part of our lives. But it’s important to cut back on the time we spend on it. Social media, unfortunately, can create a lot of comparing and comparison is the thief of joy. In 5 or 10 years you won’t look back and wish you spent more time on social media. Putting away technology will help you be more productive, have better relationships, and will help improve your sleep habits.
Stretching is a key habit to implement daily and is especially important during the season. 15 minutes of stretching before you go to bed is a great way to help your body recover, particularly after a hard practice or game. Setting aside time to stretch will help you feel better during the course of a season, improve performance, and reduce risk of injury.
These 3 habits (sleep, reducing technology, stretching) will give you the greatest chance of success. Your best ability is your availability. Our challenge is for you to implement the habits into your daily routine so you can stay healthy and have the best season possible.
