The #1 way to earn more playing time is…
Be the best on your team at 1 thing.
If you’re the best shooter, best ball-handler, best decision maker, best defender, or best rebounder on your team. You will get more playing time.
Because when your coach looks down the bench in a tough game. They are not looking for a player who is average at 5 things. That doesn't help your team win games. They are looking for a player who is really good at 1 thing. A player who can:
Make shots when the team is struggling to score. Handle the ball and make smart decisions when the team is struggling with turnovers. Lockdown the other team’s best player when the team is struggling to defend. Do the dirty work and crash the boards when the team is struggling to rebound.
The best place to start is to ask your coach. And instead of asking your coach how you can get more playing time. Ask this question:
Coach, what is the #1 thing I can work on that will help our TEAM win games?
Whatever the answer is. Commit to being the best on your team at that 1 thing. You might not become a superstar player, but you will definitely increase your role and earn more playing time this season.
