Truth Over Harmony Regarding Off-Season Development:

May 1, 2019

What is your plan this off-season?  What commitments are you willing to make?  Have you discussed with your coach areas to improve on? Are you willing to take responsibility for your level of success?  Are you willing to be different?

We hope this post can educate players & parents and give more knowledge about off-season development:

The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results:

Playing club basketball can be a great experience for many athletes.  But if that’s the ONLY thing you do this off- season your results may not be what you hope for.

Lets look at the stats:

In a typical High School/Club game a player has the ball in their hands for 2 minutes and 30 seconds per game on average. In a typical High School/Club game a player takes 7 shots per game on average.

If you’re at 4 Day Club tournament and you play 4 games.  That means you will have the ball in your hands for a total of 10 minutes and take less than 30 shots total over the span of 4 days.

You will likely spend more time in your hotel, van, or burger joint then you do on the court.

If you spend those 4 days training with purpose you could get in over 1000 shots and get in 6-7 hours of competitive pick-up where you’re getting more touches and opportunities to implement the skills you’ve trained.

Over the course of 4 months that equals 20,000 shots and over 100 hours of competitive pick-up.  If you play tournaments every single weekend it’s less than 500 shots.  That’s a big difference.

With that being said there is still a place for Club/AAU basketball.  It can be a good opportunity if you have coaches fully invested in your child's development.  But being on a club team, even a very good one will not get you a college scholarship or a jump-shot.

That opportunity will only come if you consistently do the hard, uncomfortable, and sometimes boring work when no one is watching or motivating you.

Make a plan and get to work. Let’s go!
